15 or 20 hours per week, between 09.00 and 12.15, Monday to Friday, with a 15-minute break in the middle. Intensive Courses also have four afternoons, 13.00-14.15.
In summer, the main focus is on activating your English. Many students are coming for 2-3 weeks, and the best result for them is feeling more confident in their ability to speak English in a range of real-life situations. Classes give students practice in using the language actively, rather than looking at grammar exercises in a book. Teachers will encourage students to get out and use the resources of the city, to practice English as widely as possible. The twice-weekly social programme also helps students to do and see as much as possible, during their stay in Edinburgh.
There is a range of activities in class, to get you using English as much as possible. These include:
Each class will have a balance of input (new or revised grammar and vocabulary) and output (active practice of these). You will have written homework at least once a week, and other shorter homework tasks on other days.
The Intensive Course is suitable for people who want to improve their English as quickly as possible. You can really maximise your time in Edinburgh by going on an excursion two afternoons per week, and having a speaking class on the other two afternoons per week. This just leaves Friday to plan the weekend.
Weekend trips to the Highlands are organised by local partner David Vivanco’s Scottish Language School Tours, and have a great itinerary with some original activities.
