Exam Preparation Classes

The aim of our examination preparation courses is to help you pass your chosen examination as well as possible. Everything in the class has an exam focus, so if you do speaking, it is to practise one of the topics which may come up in the exam, or to make you familiar with the format of the speaking test. The teacher will also tell you what will give you higher marks in each part of the exam.

Exams are taken at a local examination centre, and you have to pay for the exam: Cambridge First £140.00 ; IELTS £160.00

Part Time day:

• Cambridge First: Monday and Wednesday 13.15-15.45 (5 hours per week)
• IELTS: Tuesday and Thursday 13.15-15.45 (5 hours per week)

These classes focus only on examination preparation – there is little language input. You will practice techniques for passing each of the papers in either IELTS or FCE. You will have substantial written homework every week, to practice different parts of the exam. These classes are most suitable for students who are already securely at Upper Intermediate level. If your level is lower, you should also take a General English class to improve grammar and vocabulary.

The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) is generally taken by students who intend to study at university or college in the UK or another English-speaking country. We prepare students for the Academic module. In IELTS preparation, we focus on the kind of language you find in an academic context: eg formal writing; the vocabulary and grammar we expect an educated person to use and understand.

IELTS is not a pass or fail examination; it gives you a score on a continuum. Most university courses will ask for IELTS 6.0 (undergraduate) or 6.5 (masters). Courses such as law or medicine will ask for higher grades. Students studying at Advanced level can expect to get IELTS 6.5 or above. Cambridge First is approximately equivalent to IELTS 5.5.

The Cambridge English examinations are widely recognised in Europe and the rest of the world. If you pass Cambridge First, it means that you have a good Upper Intermediate (B2) level of General English; you could, for example, work as a receptionist in a hotel, or in a tourist office. Cambridge Advanced is the next goal for many students. The format of the exam is similar, but the level is significantly higher. Most students will need at least 6 months after passing Cambridge First to be ready for Cambridge Advanced, and many students who are studying part time, prefer to take a whole year.
